Backyard playsets are a high-value category, but they are also a high-risk one for importers, retailers and brand owners.
A weak frame, poor wood quality or missing safety documentation can lead to returns, bad reviews and even recalls.
Before you place an order, use these 10 questions to compare wooden swing set manufacturers and find a supplier you can
build a long-term business on.
1. Are you a real factory, or a trading company?
A direct manufacturer controls cost, production schedules and quality. Ask for factory photos, a production video, business licenses and the address of the production base. Also check whether the company holds its own import and export rights,
which shows it can manage international trade independently.
At Wanmulin, we have manufactured solid wood products in Fujian, China since 1989, and we operate our own factories with our own import and export rights.
2. Where does the wood come from?
Wood quality decides how long a swing set lasts outdoors. Ask which species is used (cedar, fir, pine), how the timber is dried and treated, and whether the supplier can prove where it comes from.
Suppliers with their own forests have a real advantage: they control selection, processing and traceability from the start.
Ask for FSC certification and its certificate number if sustainability matters to your customers or retail partners.
At Wanmulin, we source fir timber from our own FSC-certified, 30-year-growth forest farms,
and manage processing in-house for consistent quality.
3. Which safety standards do your products meet?
For the US market, home playground equipment is commonly tested to ASTM F1148. Depending on your market and product, you may also need CPSIA compliance for children's products, or EN71 for Europe.
Ask for:
Valid test reports from an accredited lab
Reports that match the exact model you plan to buy
A clear statement of what is "designed to meet" a standard and what is officially tested.
Never accept a verbal promise in place of documents.
4. How is structural strength verified?
A swing set must be stable when children climb, swing and slide at the same time. Ask about frame design
(for example, triangular reinforcement), hardware quality, ground anchors, weight capacity and load testing.
Request a copy of the assembly manual as well. Clear instructions reduce your customer complaints.
5. What can you customize? (OEM vs ODM)
OEM / private label: your logo, packaging, colors and manuals on an existing design.
ODM / custom design: a new or modified product developed from your idea, sketch or sample.
Ask how many design engineers the supplier has, how long sampling takes, and whether they can modify modules
such as slides, rock walls, swings, sandboxes and playhouses.
At Wanmulin, our R&D team includes more than 10 senior design engineers, and OEM/ODM projects are welcome.
6. What are the MOQ, price terms and payment terms?
Ask for a clear quotation covering unit price by quantity, MOQ for standard and custom items, packaging cost, price terms
(FOB, CIF, DDP) and payment terms. Beware of prices far below the market. They often mean thinner boards, weaker
hardware or skipped safety testing.
7. How do you control quality during production?
A reliable factory checks quality at every stage: incoming timber, processing, sorting, assembly tests and final inspection
before loading. Ask about inspection procedures, defect-rate standards and whether you can send a third-party inspector.
Suppliers with more than one production base under one quality framework also give you backup capacity for large or repeat orders.
At Wanmulin, two production bases operate under a unified quality system, with smart robotic sorting used to improve
consistency and traceability.
8. What are the lead times, and how reliable is delivery?
Ask for realistic timelines: sampling, mass production and shipping. Confirm peak-season capacity, especially before the Spring-Summer, and Christmas selling seasons in the US and Europe.
Ask which retail or platform customers the factory already serves, and request references where possible.
9. How good is the packaging?
Wooden playsets are large and heavy. Poor packaging causes damage, missing parts and costly claims.
Ask about carton strength, part labeling, hardware bags, container loading plans and private-label packaging options.
10. How responsive and transparent is the team?
Slow replies before the order usually mean slow replies after it. Judge the supplier by how clearly they answer technical
questions, how quickly they send documents and how openly they discuss problems. A good manufacturer acts like a
long-term partner, not just a seller.
